On May 31st, 2008 Chris Douglass was to kick off the launch of SmallWorldTreks.net by walking from Bellvue, Colorado to the top of Tumbledown Mountain in Weld, Maine. In order to make it to his destination in time to enjoy the legendary New England Fall foliage he will have covered an average of 30 miles each day!

The trip would have taken Chris from Colorado into Wyoming and Nebraska, across the wind swept plains of South Dakota, along the lake dotted landscape of Minnesota into Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. From there he planned to cross the Canadian border for a trek around the Georgian Bay, along Lake Ontario’s northern shore and back into the States via New York’s Adirondack Mountains. After a week of hiking through the Adirondacks, Chris wanted to hop onto the ferry and cross Lake Champlain to Burlington, Vermont for an order of Nectars’ famous gravy fries before embarking on the final leg of the trip, an early autumn stroll through Vermont, New Hampshire and Chris’ home state, Maine.

The journey was to end on the top of Tumbledown Mountain, a mountain Chris has hiked more times than he could count, in all seasons. After a dip in Tumbledown Pond (weather not withstanding) and a visit to the site where his favorite dog’s ashes were spread years ago, Chris planned to take a week or two off to relax among family and friends and then get on to the business of planning his next adventure.
